From India to North America, Immigrants Who Came with Nothing and Changed Everything

Brenda H. Christensen

In the 1960s and ’70s, a wave of Indian immigrants came to North America, each with eight dollars in their pockets. How did they become one of the most educated, entrepreneurial, and philanthropic immigrant groups ever to assimilate?

Here, at last, are their stories—told in their own words. From technology innovators to community activists, these seventeen energetic, unstoppable immigrants worked tirelessly to effect change in both India and North America. Some founded tech start-ups that revolutionized the way technology was designed and how data centers operated. Others devoted their lives to community building within their adopted country or established diverse philanthropic organizations whose works range from lifting thousands out of poverty to harvesting rainwater for cities and agricultural regions. Their stories reveal seemingly boundless determination—an inspiration to all those seeking to make their way, incubate and innovate ideas, and transform the world in the process.

Reviews

“Can you imagine having only $8 and having to make your way in a foreign land? Great narrative of leaders in the tech space that with the encouragement of their family and friends did just that. And more importantly, once they achieved success, they continued to strive for better, not only for their own family but for the many people they employed or assisted along the way. It serves as a great reminder that America, and the world for that matter is a melting pot and many people from many countries are what make it great.” —Amazon review

“A wonderful book, highlighting the challenges these exceptional men faced and the successes they achieved. Hats off to them (and others like them)!” —Amazon review

“Fantastic narrative and description of some of our most creative and industrious tech leaders—all who started with 8 bucks. Really great and inspiring read.” —Mike G., Amazon review

“An interesting look at the most financially successful immigrant group in the country through a peek into the lives of a dozen or so families who came to America with nothing and amassed fortunes. The backstory of education as both a driving and uniting force in their success, as well as their wives perspective on the fabric of the family life, make this read a well-rounded thought-provoking book. The strength of family is highlighted throughout as a contributing factor to success. In light of all the immigration issues we are now facing in the USA, this book is very relevant and hopeful for our future.” —Amazon review

“The book is an enjoyable and fascinating read, partly because of the frank openness of the narrative from each of the subjects, and partly because many of the companies founded or managed by the subjects are either household names, or are familiar industry icons.” —Henry F., Amazon review

“A first class set of stories that gives a vivid insight into each writers road to success from humble beginnings in India to the achievement of significant entrepreneurial success in the USA. Assisted by only $8.00 given to them by the Indian government at the start of their journey.” —Lesley, Amazon review
